Petit Piton
one of the top 5 places to see in your lifetime - Oprah Magazine
"One slip and YOU'RE DEAD", were the thoughts racing through my mind as I climbed St. Lucia's now famous world heritage site Petit Piton for the first time. Oh, how I wished I hadn't read the poor souls review on trip advisor when he recommended the climb for hardcore seasoned rock climbing veterans. He also said it was an Endeavor he was not willing to undertake anytime soon.
But I must say, I love a challenge and hey, who doesn't? Before I continue let's delve a little into describing this volcanic made monster all climbers seem to be talking about lately. Petit Piton is one of two pitons found on the wonderful Caribbean Island of St. Lucia. Overlooking the town of Soufriere this majestic wonder shoots to over 2, 500 ft from the sea. Its sister Gros Piton is a bit taller but a much easier climb and sanctioned by the St. Lucia government as a legal climb. Hence the reason why families and other relatively fit human beings tend to flock on holidays. Petit Piton is no ordinary mountain, I can guarantee you that. The only gears you need to carry along on this grueling 3-4 hour climb to the top are some good hiking shoes and plenty of water. You might be asking what about the ropes, well my friends there are no blue color climbing ropes for you today. Petit Piton has already made available, vines, tree roots and man made hand holes so you can experience your most daring adventure yet. |

A little over the halfway mark we stopped to witnesses one of the most spectacular views of the town of Soufriere. We could of even seen one of the islands to the top of St. Lucia. We heavily advise caution and require all climbers to know their limits. We average the level of difficulty on the climb a 5/5.
The higher you climb the more steep the trail gets, and you also get that feeling of "WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING". Squirming your way up between rocks might seem inconceivable but is actually quite feasible for a 200 ponder.
There's good news though! You get good cell phone coverage through practically the entire climb :). The view from the top is rattling, and well worth it.
The next good news is you get to climb with St. Lucia Islelander. Island experts who make the expedition safe, fun and exciting. After your tortuous journey, your only thoughts would be to get down (let's not even talk about the getting down part), and get home but Islelander provides you a chance to relax and soothe in the warm mineral pools of the Piton Falls.Your choice of course. So, if you are interested in climbing the St. Lucia Pitons feel free to inquire or take part in our travel forum. Want more? Watch a video here of Islelander hosting one of the team's of a large pharmaceutical company.
Islelander host a brave team of one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies conquer Petit Piton - and they sure did ;)
A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it - Kershama Petit Piton Review

Surmounting this erected mountain is a challenge, only the skilled and audacious rock climbers should endeavor. Climbing this green spike is similar to climbing Mount Everest, minus about 26,000 feet, more to the point it will be 2,461 feet above sea level. Petit Piton one of the twin peaks of the renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site is the shortest but most difficult mountain of the two, taking anywhere from 1 hour 45 minutes to a grueling 3 hours each way. To reach the summit, one would have to trek through tortuous unmarked trails, which is why it would be best to bring along a KNOWLEDGEABLE guide, and this would not be a problem since Islelander has their official Petit Piton guides. Although this climb is not sanctioned legal by the St. Lucia government, it has become a favorite for rock climbers all over the world. Many daring persons have surmounted the climb and the brave ones will take another go at it, while the majority would never attempt it again.
Be cautious along the trail, as there are several times where you can find yourself off the trail if you're not careful.
The trail is very, very steep. Hand holds in the rocks and tree roots will often assist in pulling yourself up. Be advised that there are some very tricky rope sections about 3/4th of the way to the top. Use extreme caution and know your limits. Having a spotter is very important on this difficult stretch.
There are no water sources along the trail so take plenty. The trail is well covered keeping you out of direct sunlight until reaching the top. Luckily there is cell phone coverage throughout the hike.
This unpretentious peak is not the highest peak in St. Lucia, and it is not even the highest mountain in the county. But Petit Piton marks the collision of high prairie and mountain. Most of us today are neither hunters nor warriors. But the old necessities still please us past the point of joy. Screw the superlatives: People didn't make their homes on the highest peaks in the range. They lived where providence and panorama sent the soul soaring.
